Millennium Edition: Justice League
(DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
To celebrate the end of one millennium and the beginning of another, DC Comics published a series of Millennium Editions that reprinted significant books from the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages of Comics. Shortly after the Legends mini-series (a kind of follow-up to Crisis on Infinite Earths) the various elements of the DC Universe were slowly starting to coalesce. One essential item that the newly reformed DCU was missing was the presence of the world’s greatest super-team. And so writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, along with artists Kevin Maguire and Terry Austin, set out to tell the story of an all-new Justice League that was both powerful and powerfully entertaining. Maguire and Austin gave each character a wide range of unique expressions, while Giffen and DeMatteis pitted a diverse range of super-characters against one another. Boy-scout Captain Marvel grates on arrogant Guy Gardner, who grates on everyone, from the stoic Martian Manhunter to the goofy Blue Beetle to the feminist Black Canary. Holding them and the rest together by sheer will and intimidation is none other than the Batman. Until Grant Morrison would write JLA, this was the modern-age Justice League by which all others were judged.
