Oni Press, a new publisher on the independent, small press circuit, has done much to bring underground comix to the mainstream. With “Pounded,” the story of Heavy Parker, a trust-fund boy/man and leader of a riotous punk band, Oni has created a light but engaging comic. A four-issue mini-series written by Brian Wood and illustrated by Steve Rolston, the story is a classic coming-of-age tale set against the backdrop of the Toronto music scene. Heavy is torn between his loyalty to a pretty, cheerleading, “goody two shoes” away at college in New York City and his infatuation with the in-your-face lead singer of rival band “Ali Cat.” The reader is exposed to a teen love story as seen through a window into the hardcore punk music scene. “Pounded” provides a convincing look at modern post-high school teen angst.
