Grendel Tales: The Devil May Care

    (Dark Horse, 1995-1996)
™ and ©1995 Matt Wagner

Terry LaBan and Peter Doherty brought readers this 1996 tale of the Grendel Clan on a rampage in Indianapolis. For years, the town of Indianapolis has been victimized by their “protectors,” the Grendels who gather there to race every year. The problem came not from the racing, but in the “R&R” they were so fond of partaking, much of which consisted of randomly burning houses and beating the residents within inches of their lives.

In this atmosphere of intimidation and terror, Dana, the director of the local hospital, dared to stand up to the Grendels. She even held them off at gunpoint when they barged into the hospital and beat up a doctor. Such a proud and powerful clan, however, was not likely to suffer such an insult. Worse yet, Dana’s own son seemed bent on joining them—becoming the antithesis of all that Dana stood for.
