Inkpunks Quarterly
(Funk-O-Tron, 2001)
™ and © Funk-O-Tron
Inkpunks Quarterly is a brave attempt to cram four stories into one 32-page comic book. Unfortunately, the experiment did not succeed, as this is the final issue. This fact alone makes the comic book a frustrating experience, as none of the four serials conclude with this issue.
With eight pages devoted to the first three stories and six for the final story, it’s a challenge to establish the principal characters and setting for first-time readers. The lead story, “Chaser’s Moon,” by Kimo and Pep (no last names given), is the only one to accomplish that feat. The creators combine kung-fu, fantasy, and horror elements to create a tongue-in-cheek adventure reminiscent of Tellos.
The second feature, “Pitchbright,” is uncomfortably similar to The Matrix in several respects, including a similar crisis involving the hero’s real-life body suffering a similar fate as his virtual-reality counterpart. Ej Su’s artwork is the story’s only saving grace.
“Nautilus” is a generic hero-in-armor story and is the least of the four, for one simple reason. The artist, Jonboy Meyers, uses the same line weight for everything. The backgrounds, sparse as they are, and every foreground element blend together into mush. It’s unreadable.
The final feature, “Kung Foo Sally,” wouldn’t seem out of place in a Star Wars Tales anthology, being a tale of alien bounty hunters brawling. There’s not much more to it than that, which is a shame, as the artwork is impressive.
It’s an uneven package altogether, but if it were allowed to continue, it could have had a chance to find its niche.
