Memory Man (Emergency Stop)
(Emergency Stop, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Paul Rainey
Memory Man is nominally a super-hero comic about a thirteen-year-old boy named Stephen Gore. Stephen’s secret life is that of Memory Man, nemesis of criminals everywhere, who uses his mastery of DNA memory to battle for justice. Sort of.
Unlike the American Memoryman, British self-publisher Paul Rainey recognizes the humorous possibilities for his character. In battling his first villain, a fraudulent exorcist, Memory Man winds up condemning him to reliving his worst nightmares as he lies in a never-ending coma. To wit, the British bad guy is forced to relive countless nights trying to get into that hell of Americana, the Jurassic Rock Cafe (read: “Hard Rock Cafe”). There he must cope with fickle doormen, outrageously expensive coat checks, people swiping his drinks, and the worst terror of all—everyone saying “zee” (not “zed”) when referring to the last letter of the alphabet. Oh, the horror!
