American Splendor: Bedtime Stories
(Dark Horse, 2000)
™ and ©2000 Harvey Pekar
This black and white one-shot of “neo-realism” continues the story of Harvey Pekar, the Cleveland hospital file clerk who has set the standard for autobiographical comic books. The primary story in this collection relates a series of telephone calls between Pekar and a young woman who had interviewed him eleven years earlier. She wants to write a follow-up article on him, but as the story develops, Pekar learns of the woman’s efforts to find a good job with health benefits for herself and her six-year-old daughter. It’s an intriguing look at the details of our lives—the little ones, the big ones…the stuff of just being.
