Star Trek: The Next Generation—Perchance to Dream

    (WildStorm, 2000)
™ and ©2000 Paramount Pictures

One attribute that has made the various Star Trek shows so popular is the limitless possibilities a universe of different races presents. At the same time, these different worlds and peoples can be used to explore issues and themes common to our own society. That’s the case in this Wildstorm mini-series, in which the Enterprise travels to a new Federation member planet whose people are dealing with a difficult issue regarding the sexual practices of its political leaders. The people have evolved into three distinct species, and traditional customs call for “normal” sexual intercourse to involve three people at one time. The new governor-elect prefers only one partner, a break with tradition that forces Starfleet security personnel to ward off assassination attempts from morally offended rebels who would rather die than be ruled by such a degenerate.

Meanwhile, Commander Data has a problem of his own, having activated a program enabling him to dream. In them he experiences emotions like fear and frustration, during visions of the Enterprise being destroyed—with him helpless to prevent it. A premonition? Artwork and characterizations in this title are faithful to the TV series.
