Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Golden Age Marvel 2004
(Marvel, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Marvel Characters, Inc.
For the purposes of this volume, “Golden Age” has a broad definition. Included are some characters created in the 1970s or later that were implanted in The Golden Age. Among these are Battle—Axis, Spitfire, and The Crimson Commando. Then, there are characters created after what even the most liberal definition would consider The Golden Age. These include Marvel Boy (1950), The Yellow Claw (1956), and Fin Fang Foom (1960).
Most perplexing are the characters recently created and implanted into post–Golden Age times, such as The 3-D Man (created 1977, placed in 1958). This may sound like a criticism, but it’s not. It’s actually tantalizing. Since most Handbooks address specific series, is this a glimpse of what’s coming up in Invaders and elsewhere? Of course, there are plenty of legitimate Golden Agers in all their goofy glory. Citizen V and The Fin are there, as is Sun Girl. Sun Girl! It doesn’t get much more obscure than that! The art is a mix of eras, with a pleasantly high percentage of authentic 1940s fare.
