Awakening Comics founder and auteur Steve Peters incorporates wide-ranging spiritual interests in this fantasia chronicling his imploding romantic life. Chemistry evolved over the course of a year as Peters drew one panel every day to advance the story. (Readers can find the date each panel was drawn hidden somewhere inside the panel.) In addition, Peters produced a concept album of progressive rock music—sold separately and/or available online—containing songs that correspond to each chapter of the book.

The finely crafted result features small-to-medium sized panels tell a sad but ultimately hopeful story. Accustomed to being romantically uninvolved, Peters necessarily carries on extensive inner dialogs about the virtues of love and intimacy all the while struggling to resist dark demons intent on sapping his will. The artist’s deft use of page continuity paired with his talent for depicting subtle facial expression bring this story to life, peppered ostensibly with elements of Eastern and Jewish mysticism.
