The Official Comics Enquirer Swimsuit Price Guide Investment Annual

This is not a comic book. It’s not a price guide either. Even the “swimsuit” moniker is a bit overplayed.

What it is, however, is a heavy-handed send-up of the greed, juvenile fantasies, and utter fannishness that permeated comics’ many “swimsuit specials,” price guides, and “investment guides” during the early 1990s. Hosted by seventh grader and “Supreme Comic Master and Editorial Guidance Counselor” Mister Master, this guide purportedly teaches youngsters how to reap amazing profits by buying and selling comics. Included are such amazing investment columns as “Order Forms are More Valuable than Comics” (since they contain the absolutely first appearances of the characters they name). Perhaps the best part is the annual’s bizarre price guide which lists such things as Incredible Hulk #1 (“He’s green”) at $12, but #179 (“Last non-Wolverine Marvel comic”) at $495,000. Not subtle, but occasionally very funny stuff.
