Hellboy, the inter-dimensional paranormal investigator, is back at it in this mini-series by writer/artist/creator Mike Mignola. With its dark images and supernatural themes, Hellboy drips with atmosphere and this first mini-series in the post-Nazi bad guy era for the protagonist is something of a departure. We find the wisecracking demon in the midst of Africa, seeking out a 200-year-old medicine man. Led to the ocean by the ghost, Hellboy is swallowed by a huge tidal wave, captured by three evil mermaids and imprisoned on the bottom of the ocean by an ancient enemy in the form of a giant fish. Hellboy has always been about occult and mythic mystery and this 2 issue mini-series follows suit.
