Marvel: Heroes & Legends

    (Marvel, 1996-1997)
™ and ©1996 Marvel Entertainment Group

This one-shot is based around a novel concept. Instead of merely reprinting the classic Fantastic Four Annual #3, in which Susan Storm marries Reed Richards, it invites famous comic creators to redo the story slightly. Artists like Sal and John Buscema, Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, and John Romita all contribute pages of the story, and the original Stan Lee script has been mildly reworked by Fabian Nicieza to make it more timely.

The resulting story is terrific. It preserves the charm and scope of one of the best Fantastic Four stories of all time, while simultaneously making it appealing to modern comic readers. The scripting is particularly well done, leaving the reader fully believing they’re reading a 1965 comic, until newspaperman J. Jonah Jameson instructs his colleague to get on his cellular phone and call the story in. The writers also manage to work in Phil Sheldon, the Globe reporter around whom the classic Marvels were based.
