“Airborne” is a terrific restart for the man of Green. Not only is it a well-crafted story that retells Green Lantern’s origin and introduces an intriguing story line, but it also defines the struggle between the man and the hero.

In “I want to fly again,” Hal tells his flying partner after a flight through the Edwards Air Base vicinity. Pilot vs. hero. As a Green Lantern, Hal can fly; the ring gives him powers and abilities men only dream of. [But] as a pilot, his mastery over the control stick is second to none, but his rebellious nature denies him the opportunity. [And] …what is this mysterious X-2020? What is inside the military vehicle that lurks in the darkness? Why does it moan? Who is the beautiful Captain Jillian Pearlman?

Mysteries aside, the art is excellent. I love the simple rendering that lets the story move along naturally. The double-page spread on pages 26 and 27 is outstanding. Numerous other pages display the creators’ talent. Well done. This series has earned yet another reader.
