Scattered

    (Scattered, 1992-1997)
™ and ©1995 Jesse Hamm

The first 23 issues of this title were photocopied fanzines, but with #24, Scattered made the leap, perhaps prematurely, to the ranks of self-published black-and-white comics. The enthusiasm exhibited by the creators, Jason Dube and Jesse Hamm, is evident, but fundamental spelling errors as well as substandard lettering are annoying hindrances which are difficult to overlook.

The lead feature by Jason Dube is a somewhat pretentious, spiritually oriented story involving angels, demons, and a struggle for Heaven and Hell with art and characters that seem to have been inspired, at least tangentially, by Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. The writing unfortunately is much less subtle and sophisticated.

Jesse Hamm’s contribution, “Stories to Bore and Confuse You,” takes itself much less seriously and subsequently is more successful.
