The Coffin
(Oni, 2000-2001, 2010)
™ and ©2000 Phil Hester & Mike Muddleston
B&W
Who says super-heroes are the living embodiment of good? Who says they’re even living to begin with? Sure, comics have had their share of inanimate characters (the Vision, the Red Tornado, Machine Man et al.), but none compare to Phil Hester and Mike Huddleston’s title creation The Coffin. The black and white, four issue limited series of the same name manages to balance carefully between the super-hero, science fiction and horror genres, all the while telling a classic tale of heroism and redemption.
Dr. Ashar Ahmed is a scientist driven by his work. Obsessed with conquering death, the researcher has developed an impermeable polymer—one that can capture and encase an ascending soul. To that end, the entity trapped inside lives an eternal life in a mechanical body. But when the man funding these experiments has Dr. Ahmed murdered—confiscating the research for his own evil uses—the doctor traps his soul in a human shaped suit (nicknamed the coffin). With a new lease on “life,” Ahmed looks to undo the damage created by his once selfish existence. But his murderous financier and Hell itself have different plans for the good doctor.
