Millennium Edition: The Brave and the Bold

The uninformed might not know The Brave and the Bold #28 would make it into one of DC’s special Millennium Editions, but it was here, in 1960, that the legendary Justice League of America debuted. Green Lantern, the Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter (heavy hitters Superman and Batman were too busy to respond to the Justice League summons) unite to battle Starro the Conqueror. This is their first adventure together, and they go on to have several other adventures before moving into their own title. The Brave and the Bold went on to feature such characters as Hawkman, Green Arrow, and others, before spending most of its run as a Batman team-up book, as Batman was joined by Deadman, Green Lantern, and Aquaman (to name but a few).

Besides such historic team-ups, the stories behind the tales in the
Millennium Edition’s present-day editorial are well worth reading, for information like the fact that Superman and Batman were downplayed, initially, in the League for fear it would take sales away from their own titles. Neal Adams also provided art for quite a few issues of the Batman run.
