The Space Giants

™ and ©1993 Pat Gabrielle

Pat Gabriele’s The Space Giants is the comic equivalent of one of the old Japanese Godzilla movies. Its very charm relies on the way it is at once bigger than life, yet weirdly stilted and reductive. The story begins when an unknown party calls the home of Tom Mura, reporter for “National Press International.” His son, Michael Oliver Mura (inexplicably called “Mikko”) gets the message and happily relays to his father that tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. they’ll see the power of Rodak. Right on cue, they find that their home has been transported into a dinosaur-infested jungle by a giant named Rodak. Luckily, the huge hero “Goldar, The Space Avenger” shows up to save the day.

Amusingly unbelievable in its own right, the most startling thing about this title is that it comes from shock-horror publisher Boneyard Press. They seem to realize the irony themselves, however, billing this series as “A Shiny Happy comic for the Kids. Enjoy.”
