Maison Ikkoku symbolized creator Rumiko Takahashi’s artistic evolution, from the adolescent fun of her earlier work to a heartwarming, witty, and dramatic tale of love, one that gains depth and sharp edges as it unfolds. There are no aliens or gender–shifting characters in Maison Ikkoku; instead, it chronicles the romance of college student Yusaku and an older woman, the widow Kyoko, who also happens to be his landlord. Subtlety and charm are Takahashi’s strongest weapons, and Maison Ikkoku has an abundance of both as she peers into the heart of relationships without tainting anything with saccharine or sex. The bond between Yusaku and Kyoko is realistic yet there’s a purity and innocence to it that is rare in any storytelling medium. The characters develop over time; however, they never lose the essence of who they are. The delightfully quirky supporting cast adds spice to the sugar in Takahashi’s early 80s masterpiece.
