Lady Death and Jade
(Chaos, 2002)
™ and © Brian Pulido
Ever since Lady Death became a living being again, she has been crossing paths with other residents of the Chaos universe. In this one-shot, she runs afoul of Jade, another of the company’s trademark bad girls.
The plot is reminiscent of umpteen Silver Age Marvel comics. Protagonists pursue separate agendas, which put them at odds, but they join forces for a common resolution. The twist here is that one protagonist is a currently a live goddess of Death and the other is a vampire sorceress.
This story, by Brian Augustyn, is a fairly solid entry, but there’s truly nothing here that would damage a reader’s sense of completeness to miss. The purpose of these one-shots seems to be to expose readers of Lady Death, Chaos’ flagship character, to other characters whose exploits they might enjoy. It accomplishes that well.
The strong suit of most Chaos comics consists of dark stories, strong female characters, and beautiful art, in this case provided by Ivan Reis and Joe Pimentel. This issue, while unremarkable, is consistent with the rest of the line.
