Millennium Edition: Superboy

    (DC, 2001)
™ and ©2001 DC Comics

The end of a millennium is a historic event and is as good a reason as any to reprint significant issues from the past. From Action Comics No. 1 at the dawn of the Golden Age to JLA No. 1 of much more recent vintage and from Detective Comics to Young Romance Comics, DC reprinted a variety of comics, spanning generations as well as genres.

As the Golden Age began to wane, kid sidekicks began to supplant their adult counterparts in popularity. Superman of course had no kid sidekick so telling stories about Superman’s childhood seemed to be a good idea regardless of how it violated previous continuity, since Superman originally appeared as an adult to an astonished world. The Superboy character first appeared in 1945 in More Fun Comics and then graduated to his own title in 1949. The first issue of that book is this Millennium Edition which reveals other inconsistencies such as Superboy growing up in Metropolis rather than Smallville.
