The Hammer

    (Dark Horse, 1997-1998)
™ and ©1997 Kelley Jones

Fans of Kelley Jones’ dark, moody artwork on Batman will appreciate the four-issue mini-series from Dark Horse that Jones also wrote. Jones’ art style is especially appropriate for this horror tale of evil monstrosities with a decidedly Lovecraftian design.

Professor Malleus has been possessed by the Hammer, the spirit of an alien warrior who lived 1,500 years ago. He uses methods as cryptic as the occult, and as overt as a huge sword to defeat the evil that seeks to devour the innocent. The horror of the stories is mitigated somewhat by the presence of Professor Malleus’ friends, Carl and Alex, whose primary function is to take the Hammer to a Denny’s restaurant because his body requires a high fat, high cholesterol diet.
