Dead Meat

By the year 2047, global warming will have profoundly changed the Earth. The river Thames became the Thames lake, wheat fields became desert, and famine gripped the land. Out of a need to survive, all meat-eating was banned, since you’d have to feed an animal sixteen pounds of grain to produce a single pound of beef.

Eventually, legal protections once granted only to humans were granted to all animals. Meat-eating became tantamount to murder. Skipping stones in the water became “threatening behavior” as it scares the fish. And you could be hauled off to jail for contributory negligence if your pet cat happened to eat a mouse.

Of course, some persisted in the old ways. Those criminals had to answer to P.U.L.S.E.: The Police Undercover Livestock Enforcement Patrol and the dreaded inspector Raam. Let flesh-criminals beware!
