Whodunnit?

    (Eclipse, 1986-1987)
™ and ©1986 Mark Evanier and Brent Anderson

This short-lived 1986 series had a great gimmick. It combined traditional detective fiction with a contest which promised to reward $1,000 cash to the first person to correctly solve the mystery in each issue. Of course, it wasn’t enough merely to name the killer—readers had to prove they’d really gotten to the bottom of things by unraveling the whole case, citing motives of the characters involved, and in some cases pointing out how key pieces of evidence were known to be phony. This was no contest for the sloppy sleuth or lazy reader.

The thing which made it all work, however, was the crisp writing of Mark Evanier. Known for his high standards, this comics and television veteran could be counted on not to employ cheap plot devices or do something totally illogical in order to simply confound readers. Although not a commercial success, the issues of this series are as enjoyable to puzzle out today as they were in 1986.
