The Hammer: The Outsider

    (Dark Horse, 1999)
™ and ©1999 Kelley Jones

Kelley Jones is best known for his moody, inky, and often humorous art during his long stint drawing Batman at DC. In this and several other creator-owned Hammer mini-series, Jones’ art is arguably at its peak and his writing proves similarly intense. His imagination is as rich as his renderings, as this wild yarn mixing horror, fantasy, and dark wit makes clear. Terrible monsters stalk the earth while a careless humanity is blind to it, and only a motley crew featuring a lone human with a pistol, a solemn alien from a separate dimension, and a powerful and mysterious helmeted being known as The Hammer stand in the way.

Featuring heroes both noble and unique; a grotesque assortment of monsters whose most prominent features are their gaping maws; and plenty of horror, humor, and gore—with dabs of religion and magic thrown in for good measure—this comic truly gives Jones a chance to shine. Published by Dark Horse.
