Captain Phil
(Steeldragon, 1984)
™ and ©1984 Greg Guler Hercules Jr.
Captain Phil (and the Intergalactic Space Pals) is a lighthearted science fiction parody from the salad days of the black and white comics boom of the early 80s. Briskly paced, well-drawn, and packed with gags both subtle and obvious, Captain Phil is Greg Guler’s tribute to the great aviation adventure tales of the Golden Age. The obvious touchpoint is Blackhawk, to whom Captain Phil bears more than a passing resemblance (along with Bernie Wrightson’s Captain Stern). Together with his motley kid-gang crew of Intergalactic Space Pals, the Captain handles fearsome space-threats like the Melevoloids, with his corncob pipe clutched between his teeth at all times. Fun, kid-friendly and unpretentious, Captain Phil could have been a crossover success with color printing and decent distribution. Unfortunately, the title didn’t survive the black-and-white shakeout of the mid-80s.
