Zen Intergalactic Ninja All-New Color Special

Zen gets an origin story in this chromium-covered color special. He was born—or rather, genetically engineered—on the planet Baltoon in the Rigel System. Designed as a superior being, he was considered a failed experiment, and ordered to be destroyed. But the research assistant in charge of disposing of him had a change of heart and instead placed Zen in a transport pod and sent him into space.

He landed on the planet Om where he was raised and trained in the arts of self-defense and meditation. When he had learned that all his masters could teach him, he was given a spaceship and sent on his way, eventually encountering Jeremy Baker, a boy on Earth. He also encountered Lord Contaminous, a creature whose goal was to turn Earth into a toxic wasteland. Luckily, an elder race had also given Zen the ability to fight Contaminous in his hands, in the form of buried “geocrystals.” These crystals, when placed in Zen’s “recyclotron” became a squadron of eco-warrior super-heroes. With them, the wisecracking Zen fights to save Earth from pollution.

Shakespeare, this is not. But Zen certainly proved popular enough with his primarily young audience.
