The Tale of the Body Thief (Anne Rice’s…)

™ and ©1999 Sicilian Dragon

Ever since Interview with the Vampire first saw print, novelist Anne Rice has become something of an entertainment industry unto herself. Aside from her dabbling in various other forms of media and product extensions (anyone for an official Anne Rice candle or Lestat: The Cologne?), Rice also finds time to supervise and, occasionally, even contribute original text to the vampire-inspired line of comics published by Sicilian Dragon, a New Orleans based imprint of Beyond Comics. Such is the case with this mini-series, an extension of Rice’s wildly popular Vampire Chronicles. Here, we find the vampire Lestat, weary of his immortal life, haunted by dreams of his friends, and hunting down an all-too-human serial killer. He is confronted by a mysterious stranger, who delivers a cryptic message in the form of an H.P. Lovecraft story. This strange messenger and the significance of his presence in Letstat’s life will be revealed in the fullness of time. That is, if Lestat doesn’t succeed in figuring out a way to kill himself first.

Rice didn’t actually write the script for the limited series, but her story, adapted with great skill by Faye Perozich and drawn by Travis Moore, is certainly in keeping with the voice and spirit of Rice’s works. True vampire fans will certainly appreciate this haunting tale, as well as the text items Rice does contribute, ranging from treatments for television shows to entries from her personal journals.
