Crossings
(KCQ, 2004)
™ and © KCQ
Two orphaned children from two different worlds (literally) must find one another, unlock the secrets of a mysterious medallion, and learn their ancestral secrets. Sounds simple, but, in Crossings, everything isn’t always as it appears. Using a mix of fantasy and reality, Alex lives in LaCruz and Yma lives in a Ylevain village in another world. To save both worlds and Alex’s life, they have to uncover the secret of crossing between them. The Quevedos provide an engaging tale that packs a lot of action into the first two issues. Most of the character development, however, comes from individuals talking about Alex and Yma, rather than from their own words and actions. We know these kids are going to accept great responsibilities in this story, but we don’t see a lot of individual personality on their part until #2, where Yma fights hooded baddies in a ruin. The art is a nice complement to the story, though the pages without panel lines can be difficult to understand at first glance. Worth reading.
