Fifteen thousand years ago, the Ninth Men had mastered their environment through the perfection of human abilities. In doing so, they had created a city of wonders called Gazra. However, just as the eight ages of man before them, the Ninth Men were doomed by man-made disaster. In order that someone might be spared, He Who Speaks for Gazra commanded that three people (whom later generations would call Night Glider, Captain Glory, and Bombast) be put in suspended animation in a secret city, so that the Tenth Men might someday awaken them.

But the Ninth Men’s Doctor Roag and General Ordiz had also gone into suspended animation, along with a select group of followers. When they awoke in 1992 under the city of Chicago, they set about making the Tenth Men their servants—or else see them destroyed. And only the three original sleepers stood in their way.
