In every high school there’s the kid who doesn’t fit in—the brainy little guy who tries hard to be cool, but instead just gets beat up a lot by the local bullies. In Ernest Hemingway High School, that person goes by the name of Virgil Ovid Hawkins. Virgil, to put it bluntly, is a geek.

But ever since he was caught up in the “Big Bang,” when he inhaled the strange gas being used by police, Virgil has been something else: a super–hero. He’s called Static because he controls electrostatic energy, using it to do everything from “flying” atop a garbage can lid, to throwing taser-like punches against his enemies. But his real secret weapon is the same inspired intellect that makes him a social outcast at school.

Static is a likable character in the tradition of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The storyline is as much about growing up as it is about super–powers.
