Any time you find an all-ages comic that means more than just “little kids can read it without confusion and without offending their parents,” that’s a comic book worth checking out. Such is the case with writer/artist Aaron Renier’s Spiral-Bound. The adventure of Turnip the elephant, Stucky the dog, and their friends, as they take art class, cope with the town “monster,” and raise a little heck (this is for all ages, after all) provides a well-paced story that parents can read, their kids can read, or parents can read to their kids too young to read.

As for us older “kids”: Don’t be surprised if you get a bit of that feeling from childhood when you’re playing with your blocks and creating playtime adventures in your mind. Renier’s writing has that feel to it. It’s easy to become absorbed by the author’s vision so wondrously portrayed in the character’s environment.

Renier draws a world in which happy endings and hope abound while he addresses such vast topics as childhood fears, the growing independence of children, and the role of grown-ups in all of it.
