Battle Angel Alita: Last Order

    (Viz, 2002-2009)
TM and (c) Viz Communications, Inc.
Graphic novel; reads right to left; black and white series.

The only real review a new volume of Battle Angel Alita needs is a simple statement: Expect more of the same. But if you’ve managed to miss previous volumes, it’s riveting science fiction that’s equal parts heart breaking drama and action-packed adventure featuring one of the strongest (and most attractive) female characters in manga. And if you have missed previous volumes, this new installment serves as an excellent starting point for new readers.

Wait, there is one minor innovation; while artist Yukito Kishiro’s style still remains very much his own (unlike his Frank Miller inspired artwork seen in the Ashen Victor series), it’s clear he’s been reading Barry Windsor-Smith, if the Greco-Roman look of the scientist’s assistant is any indication. Although Miller’s fingerprints are all over the unknown female warrior who appears towards the end. (She looks like she’s stepped out of Sin City 2020.) So, in short, the four-year wait has definitely been worth it.
