Smash Comics was one of the flagship titles of the Quality line, a first-rank publisher of the golden age. Early issues struggled to find a star amid a lineup of perennial backups like Espionage and Hooded Justice. Issue #14 introduced The Ray, a hero who could turn himself into a beam of light. Lavishly illustrated by Lou Fine, one of the greatest golden age artists, the Ray gained enough popularity to be revived many years later by DC in The Freedom Fighters and Justice League of America. Four issues later, he was joined by Midnight, one of many imitators of Will Eisner’s Spirit. However, writer/artist Jack Cole (creator of Plastic Man among others) was one of the few creators who could approach Eisner’s skill and wit, and Midnight soon developed its own distinct personality. Midnight kept Smash going until Quality folded in the late 40s.
