Star Trek: First Contact’s deluxe packaging conceals a perfunctory adaptation of the 1996 Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, “Star Trek: First Contact.”

In ST:FC, the Borg, the Enterprise’s deadliest enemy, attempt to “assimilate” Earth by traveling backward in time to the late 21st century, when the people of Earth first make contact with an alien species and begin the process that leads to the formation of the Federation and Star Fleet. Members of the crew lead by Riker and LaForge must prevent them from sabotaging an experiment on Earth, while Captain Picard, Data and Worf fight hand-to-hand against the Borg invaders aboard the Enterprise.

Like most movie adaptations, the ST:FC book struggles to realistically depict the familiar characters and reproduce multi-million dollar special effects on the comic book page.
