Mister Blank

™ and ©1997 Christopher J. Hicks
(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)
You know you’re onto a winner when Christopher Hicks has the nous to name his hero Sam Smith after one of the world’s best beers. This is a stylish and well designed work, starting each issue with the concluding page from the previous time on the inside cover plus a synopsis. Sam is an office worker who confronts two prowlers when working late. Tackling them upends his life, yet he proves remarkably adept at avoiding death while learning a lot about the company he’s employed by and more besides. There’s clones, robots, nutty scientists, a mime able to distort reality and other oddities. Hicks is a fine stylist who brings a manga sensibility to his art, making for breathtaking action sequences. This does also ensure a quick read, and there is the feeling that the story is running away from him. Close in spirit to Madman or early Mage, it’s a relatively original adventure comic worth investigating. ~FP
