Cartoonist Booby London’s style is taken straight from Segar’s Popeye, but he applies it to a distinctly hippy style stories of sexual politics, dope and revolution in his Merton strips, occupying half the issue. They’re all very dated these days, but the art’s great and if you’ve ever wondered about the sex lives of Popeye’s cast this is the nearest you’ll get. Fellow contributors Gary Hallgren, Gary King, Willy Murphy and Ted Richards (with a short Dopin’ Dan strip) have a knockabout agenda for their material, and it stands up far better, particularly Hallgren’s contribution, which is passably Cliff Sterrett in places. The highlight of the issue, though, is Shary Flenniken’s delightful “Trots And Bonnie.” Again influenced by older cartoonists, in this case largely Wilhelm Busch, it’s a simple, disjointed, quirky piece. Never mind the stories: scan the art, and you should be delighted. ~WJ
