Nat Turner
(Kyle Baker, 2005-2006, 2008)
™ and ©2005 Kyle Baker
Based largely on the Confessions of Nat Turner as given in 1831, Kyle Baker’s series attempts to describe the American legend in a sequence of finely rendered drawings.
First detailing Nat Turner’s childhood in slavery, as well as the more general conditions of slavery and the slave trade, the series then follows him through his decision to lead a rebellion and the fateful events that followed. The text is at a minimum and the characters never speak so the story is accessible to everyone. Baker’s comic brings a historical figure usually known only for his last rebellion to life and allows the modern reader an insight to this enigmatic person’s youth.
