Eye Opener Bob The Story of Bob Edwards
(The Institue of Applied Art, 1957-1958)
Bob Edwards was a prominent Canadian publisher and journalist, primarily known for his satirical and outspoken publication, the “Calgary Eye Opener”. He was the founder, publisher, and editor of the newspaper by the same name. Edwards used humor and satire to advocate for social change, covering a range of topics including women’s rights, the environment, and old-age pensions.
His greatest contribution to a sub-genre of comic books fans is that the “The Calgary Eye Opener” hired an aspiring young artist by the name of Carl Barks in the 1930’s who went on to work at Walt Disney Studios and became the famous “Good Duck Artist”. Barks was also a skilled and prolific writer of the Donald Duck 10-pagers that he wrote and drew for “Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories”. He began the run with issue No. 31 (April 1943) and ended with original stories in issue No. 312 (September 1966).
