Marvel Milestone Edition: Amazing Fantasy

As Marvel milestones go, they don’t come much more significant than Amazing Fantasy #15, which introduced Spider-Man. This is a complete facsimile down to the original ads for ten-foot inflatable boa constrictors and 25-cent dresses.

The story goes that despite the success of the Fantastic Four, Marvel wasn’t confident enough to give Spider-Man his own title at first. Instead his debut occupied the final issue of what had been Amazing Adult Fantasy, “The magazine that respects your intelligence.” Fans knew a good thing when they saw it though, and the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko origin story amounted to the creation of the most popular new super-hero in over twenty years. There was still room, though, for three further Lee and Ditko short mystery tales of the type that had been the title’s mainstay. Decently drawn, they are otherwise very much period pieces.
