Rant is a unique, three-issue vampire story which steers clear of the usual clichés which plague that genre. The tell began in the days of ancient Carthage, a time when Roman ships, posing as a trade delegation sailed, up to the foot of the city. Nobody was fooled, for their ships were heavy with soldiers and arms.

In the city, calls went out for a sacrifice to be made to the god Ba’al so that Carthage would be saved. In the temple, a young acolyte named Rant joined the call, even though his wife was pregnant with their first child. Rant did this because he thought he had found a way to cheat the gods—a midwife had been called to delay the birth until after the time of sacrifice. But darker forces were at work, and the midwife did more than just delay the birth. Instead, she tampered with the unborn child so that it became an instrument of demonic vengeance. By the time Rant learned the truth, his own soul was in jeopardy.
