Upton Sinclair’s powerful 1906 novel (originally published as the serialized The Appeal to Reason) propelled the author to literary greatness, and exposed the dangerous and unsanitary conditions of Chicago’s meat–packing industry. The public furor that followed led to the passage of both the Pure Food and Drug Act and The Beef Inspection Act.

Powerfully adapted by Peter Kuper ( Heavy Metal, Mad’s "Spy vs. Spy," Endless Gallery), this tragic story follows Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkis and his family, as they struggle to forge a new life in what they believed was the “Promised Land” of America.

Ironically, though his accounts of the horrors of Chicago’s stockyards were true, Sinclair himself apparently felt that the true message of his story was missed: he had intended to call attention to the inhumane treatment of the working–class poor, whose meager wages and piteous living conditions made them little better than slaves.
