Spawn Blood and Salvation
(Image, 1999)
™ and ©1999 Todd McFarlane Productions, Inc.
Earth’s last humans know they will be exterminated by the minions of Hell, commanded by the Anti-Pope of NuVatican City. They plan a desperate assault involving many guns, a big train, and faith, while ignoring a boy’s plea to enlist the help of a Hellspawn he claims saved him. The Hellspawn, who has a secret connection to the boy and his mother, must deal with a demented angel and many vicious creatures in his quest to save the day.
Painted in browns and blacks, the profoundly atmospheric art can be difficult to follow. The story is presented in prose so thick, and with a string of loquacious demons compelled to deliver flowery speeches, it’s a relief when the Hellspawn shows up and starts kicking butt. Still, an interesting examination of redemption and faith that some could find moving.
