Protheus (Mike Deodato’s…)
(Caliber, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Mike Deodato
Leo Protheus is a private detective in Megalopolis, a city that was built on the ruins of Sao Paulo after the Atomic Wars. In this dystopian future, private detectives are little more than hired assassins promising “swift and efficient justice.” The series melds the hardboiled detective genre with elements of science fiction like androids and post-atomic war civilization.
Before he achieved the “hot artist” status in the United States on such titles as Wonder Woman and Elektra, Mike Deodato was published in his native country, Brazil. Protheus was a two-issue series that reprinted some of his work from that time. Despite a reliance on Zip-A-Tone texture screens, Deodato’s nascent art exhibits his mastery of the female form, which would serve him well in the coming “bad girl” craze.
