As the result of an alien assault, Tommy Monaghan has X-ray vision and telepathy, both of which serve him well in his career. Monaghan kills people for money: he’s a hitman. He used to make ordinary kills, but since he’s acquired his special skills, he contracts for the “weird jobs.” Unlike most hitmen, however, Tommy Monaghan comes across as a likable guy with a tedious job and a group of wise-cracking friends. Against his everyday-life surroundings, Monaghan’s supernatural powers and killings take on a surreal aspect. Nonetheless, Hitman is firmly rooted in DC’s super-hero universe; in fact, he even threw up on Batman’s boots during their second encounter.

Hitman is one of the few characters from DC’s Bloodlines-themed annuals to catch on. Though the title has a dark tone, there is an underlying sense of parody in the stories penned by Garth Ennis, who’s also known for his work on Hellblazer and Preacher.
