Miss America
(Marvel, 1944-1947)
©1948 Miss America Publishing Corp.
This title began in 1944 as “Miss America Comics.” Its title hero was Madeline Frank, a woman who was struck by lightning and gained super-powers. First appearing in Marvel Mystery Comics #49, she fought the Axis powers as a member of the Liberty Legion, and later alongside the Invaders.
By the second issue of this series, however, the title had changed its name to Miss America Magazine and had gone in a different direction. It became a teen romance comic, introducing the characters of Patsy Walker, her boyfriend Buzz Baxter, and rival Hedy Wolfe. These characters became instant hits, attracting a loyal base of female fans. Their success inspired a number of follow-on magazines, including Patsy Walker and Patsy and Hedy.
