Bluebeard

    (Slave Labor, 1993-1994)
™ and ©1996 James Robinson and Phil Elliott

A policeman arrives at one of the Greek Isles and inquires about the tragic death of a recently married socialite. It soon emerges that the apparently accidental death was a premeditated murder and the pattern matches what the detective has found across Europe already; a pattern attributed to a man forever changing his appearance and identity, a man the police have dubbed Bluebeard.

James Robinson’s well-written interpretation of the Bluebeard legend manages to keep the attention throughout the story. The strong sinister tone combined with a hatred of women produces a taut, psychological exploration of the darker sides of sex and marriage. Phil Elliott’s artwork, with its effective use of shadow, is apropos with individual appearances of the main characters. Based on the Bluebeard legend this graphic novel is intended for mature readers.
