This black and white flip book from Image Comics offers a bit of Lullaby and a bit of The Imaginaries. In Lullaby, writers Mike S. Miller and Ben Avery play with the concept of the fairy tales, recasting our childhood favorites in an anime/manga environment, where the fantasy world exists next to our own. The cast encompasses a great deal of children’s literature, including characters from Treasure Island, as well as traditional fairy tales and other flights of fancy. Here, Alice is a warrior in Queen of Hearts’ army, trussed up in a tech–suit and ready to rumble.

The Imaginaries tells the tale of our imaginary friends—the super–heroes we escaped with when we were kids, the stuffed animals we gave personalities, the invisible opponents we played basketball against—and what becomes of them after we stop believing in them. Perhaps they form a team of freedom fighters in an imaginary realm…

These are “family–friendly” stories from two intriguing creators.
