JLA: Earth 2

    (DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics

During the rescue of a stricken airliner, the Justice League is dismayed to find everyone aboard is dead. The mystery deepens when it is discovered that the passengers’ money has Benedict Arnold’s image and their hearts are on the right side of their bodies. Even more bizarre revelations are in store when a virtuous Lex Luthor petitions the JLA to come to his anti-matter universe to end the tyranny of the Crime Syndicate, a perverse reflection of this Earth’s Justice League.

Before the Crisis on Infinite Earths, parallel dimensions containing alternate versions of heroes was a common plot device and convenient explanation for the Golden Age characters. Although the goal of the Crisis was to simplify the DC universe, there has been steady erosion of that idea. This impressive one-shot by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly is worth any subsequent damage to single-universe ideology.

The Crime Syndicate first appeared in the run of Silver Age Justice League. Then, however, their home was designated Earth 3 since Earth 2 was the home of the Justice Society.
