MBQ

    (Tokyopop, 2005-2006)

From a seedy karaoke bar with private rooms where anything can happen to a small convenience store where the cashiers are more interested in watching porn than serving the customers, this isn’t your usual glamorous, Hollywood-style Los Angeles. In the midst of this seedy backdrop, Omario struggles to draw unconventional comics that do more than just copy the super-heroes of the past. Unfortunately, the rent is due, so he’d better find a publisher quick or face a life of flipping burgers at MBQ, the local fast-food place.

Felipe Smith, a past Rising Stars of Manga winner, creates a gritty, realistic style all his own while still utilizing the conventions of manga.
