Strange Suspense Stories

The perennial also-ran publisher, Charlton, experienced a momentary flash of brilliance in 1967 when longtime artist and art director Dick Giordano was promoted to editor and brought a wave of talented young writers and artists into the fold. Strange Suspense Stories is a revival of one of Charlton’s most successful titles of the 1950s—a blend of horror, science fiction, and mystery in the mold of EC’s Shock SuspenStories. The 1960s revival issues feature some of the earliest professional work of Dennis O’Neill (at that time using the alias Sergius O’Shaughnessy), who went on to become the longtime editor of Batman, and Jim Aparo, who did memorable work at DC in the 1970s and 1980s. Strange Suspense Stories, during Giordano’s editorship, provided solid storytelling and art, with tales that anticipated DC’s efforts in House of Mystery several years later.
